Magnolia Table:
The first time I looked through this book, I admit I was a bit of snob. Her recipes called for a lot of "cheats," liked Cream of Mushroom and Pillsbury Grands and even Velveeta (heaven forbid!). But I read her Introduction and the stories behind her recipes, and I came to see them as the meals a busy mother of five prepares for her family. They are home cooked Texas meals, and at their heart, they remind me of what my own mom would make for us when we were growing up.

Mastering the Art of Japanese Home Cooking
I grew up celebrating milestones and having family gatherings at a restaurant in my hometown called Akios Sushi, and I've been homesick for those flavors since it closed down a few years ago. We finally decided step out of our comfort zone in the kitchen and try making Japanese food ourselves with the help of Morimoto, who, I must add, is an excellent teacher. And while my brother who lived in Japan for two years still says Akio has the best Gyoza he's ever tasted, he had the same praise for Morimoto's Teriyaki.

Muffins and Biscuits
We bought this book because of that muffin on the cover. And they are as good as they look! We've also added Heidi Gibson's Grilled Cheese Kitchen to our Cookbook Library, and now it feels like we'll never run out of quick, crowd pleasing recipes to try in any of these three categories!

Sarabeth's Bakery: From My Kitchen to yoursThis book is for the baker who doesn't mind a little flour in her hair and who has the patience to wait for dough to rise or butter to laminate. The results are always as flavorful as they are beautiful, but they're not for the fate at heart! If you are willing to turn on the oven in the summer and start recipes a day or two in advance, I promise it is well worth it.
