Every morning, the dogs go out first thing, and I greet the day from our kitchen door. Today, the sun was slower to rise and a most welcome chill bade me to wrap my blanket tighter around me. Did you know that when the seasons change, there is a smell of fall in the air? It's not the cinnamon or pumpkin or apple you might think- it's something crisp and clean and cool, a cold that stimulates all the senses. Undeniably, this is the time of year when I come alive.
Amidst the fall recipes, decorations, and clothing, I've been sleeping off an enduring bout of my annual back-to-school illness. But I can't complain- not while I'm curled up on the couch with a cozy blanket and homemade soup. And not when Matt has to work 80+ hours a week, and I get to take a sick day. He takes it in stride. We're lucky to have jobs that we love, and we're happy to have each other. I may be sick and he may be exhausted, but homebodies that we are, we are perfectly contented. September, October, November, December- Apart from the mundane of our day to day, in spite of the craziness that is teaching middle school and general surgery residency, these are the things that I'm looking forward to, the moments that make life beautiful, and what we're up to currently.
READING. I recently stumbled across this pin: "The Very Best Pride & Prejudice Books {spin-offs, Sequels, and Retellings}." Imagine if Lizzy had said yes to the first proposal from Darcy. Or what if Mr. Bennett had died not soon after Lizzy rejected Darcy's first proposed. OR what if Georgiana had come to Netherfield with Darcy and Bingley and become friends with Elizabeth? It's always hit and miss with books like this- but I think I'll try a few!
FOLLOWING. I don't know what took me so long, but discovering more like minded people to follow online has been so inspiring. These women create so much beauty through simplicity. They capture love of family, home, nature, and food. Kindred spirits! Fresh Farmhouse and A Joyful Journey on Tumblr collect all kinds of pretty photos. @taylorgolden and @katie_clova and @whitjohns and @mamawatters on Instagram had added some real sophistication and beauty to my feed!
EATING. Our Best Bites Minestrone with grilled cheese made with sourdough bread and sharp white cheddar. Drooling. Matt's famous chili with homemade corn bread- I'll tease him forever because he won a church chili competition with this recipe. Pumpkin cake with cream cheese frosting. Mmm, mm, mmm! Recipe to come.
GROWING. The garden this year bore 9 different types of produce. With four different types of tomatoes, we've been experimenting with sauces, soups, and salsas. No canning though- We're eating them quick enough, and hey- ain't nobody got time for that.
An then there are the pumpkins. My favorite thing to grow, but MAN they take up a lot of space! We planted a few different types AND had some mutants spring up from last year's compost, so with how the vines took over, I thought we'd be set for the holidays. Our bounty? Three pumpkins. Three. One is a giant and one is a fancy Cinderella. None are traditional and orange. Plus a handful of Jack-be-Little pumpkins, but they don't count. So we may be investing further in our front door stoop fall decor. Maybe some mums? Definitely more pumpkins, but our home grown bunch will be the personality of the front stoop :)
WATCHING. I don't do scary. I'm a wimp! The Walking Dead gave me reoccurring nightmares of really slow zombies stalking me. And then came Stranger Things. I was nervous, but my brothers insisted. Consensus? WE LOVED IT. The characters, the setting, the plot, the music! It was more supernatural fiction than horror- just the right amount of suspense and scary for me. We paced ourselves (more due to Matt's insane schedule than any amount of self-control), and now we're stuck waiting until 2017 for the second season.
Seriously? Watch it.
